Last month was bittersweet for everyone at CDC Federal Credit Union. The bitter – we said goodbye to our CFO, Walter Hobby. The sweet – we welcomed our new CFO, Tim Gardner.
Hobby came to CDC Federal Credit Union in December 2006 with a goal to further his professional development by being a part of a larger credit union. At that time CDC FCU maintained $146 million in deposits with a little more than 15,000 members. During his time at the credit union, Hobby helped grow CDC FCU to $279 million in deposits and almost 20,000 members. In addition, Hobby helped the credit union through the great recession of 2008 by mitigating any negative influences.
In an email to all associates, Betsy Mercier, chief executive officer of the credit union, said that the results reached during Hobby’s tenure are very impressive and a testament to Walter’s dedication and commitment and to his value as a member of the Executive Management Team.
On August 5, 2019, a retirement celebration was held at the credit union’s main office complete with his favorite meal catered by “What’ll you have?” The Varsity. Hobby’s wife, friends, and coworkers gathered to honor his work and his achievements. His last day with the credit union was August 16.
We welcomed Tim Gardner to CDC Federal Credit Union as CFO on August 5. Previously, Gardner worked as a sales executive with CUNA Mutual Group covering 40 credit unions throughout Georgia and South Carolina. Prior to that he was general manager for sales and distribution in the European segment for CUNA Mutual’s International Division. Based in Dublin, Ireland, he led the sales account teams and managed the Financial Services Programs and third party relationships.
Gardner also worked as a financial analyst for Wright Patman Congressional Federal Credit Union in Washington, D.C. where he was responsible for the investment portfolio and the preparation of the monthly financial statements.
Gardner earned degrees in both finance and accounting and has a Masters of Accountancy from the University of Michigan. He also holds an MBA from DePaul University in Chicago.
Mercier said in an email announcing Gardner’s acceptance of the CFO position, that while no one can replace Hobby, Gardner brings new and exciting perspectives to the role.
As for Hobby, he said he’s looking forward to his retirement and plans to travel, visit family, spend time with his granddaughter, and spend time giving back through a lot of church work.
Congratulations and best wishes to Walter on your retirement! Thank you for your time and hard work at CDC Federal Credit Union!
And welcome to Tim Gardner as the new CFO! We all look forward to working with you!
